Standard
lighting, in particular Fluorescent tubes have a number of issues:-
| Flicker |
A
faulty lamp causes flicker which can cause issues for epilepsy sufferers.
There is also the flicker caused by the initial power up striking
of the lamp. Older fittings with magnetic ballasts also exhibit ´buzzing´ effects. |
| Heat
Generation |
Tubes
produce heat which can have an impact on air-conditioning costs (particularly
in office environments). The heat can also cause diffusers to ´yellow´ and reduce the effective light output. |
| Chemicals/Disposal |
Fluorescents
contain toxic chemicals such as mercury which is dangerous to the environment.
In fact, companies using fluorescents are technically a producer
of hazardous waste and as such lamps must be disposed off in a controlled
manner. |
| Efficiency |
Fluorescent
lamps have to rely on a ballast which increases the overall energy consumption of the fitting.
Traditional magnetic ballasts can add an extra 15% to the overall power consumption. (Modern
electronic ballasts do however reduce this figure to around 5% extra). |
| Operating
Life |
Typical
fluorescents have a life span of around 8000-10,000 hrs, and this
figure deteriorates depending how often the lamp is turned on/off
due to the high voltage spikes required to start the tube. |
| UV
Radiation |
Fluorescents
also generate Ultra Violet rays (UV) and Infra-Red (albeit in small
doses). |
We can
supply replacement LED based tubes in
2’, 3’,
4’ & 5' lengths. The advantages
are:-
| Instant
On |
No
Flicker, instant on and ideal for movement sensor based systems |
| Recyclable |
No
harmful chemicals. Our lamps are also RoHS compliant. |
| Efficiency |
LED
lamps operate direct from AC mains, so the efficiency of the lamp
is better than Fluorescents. |
| Power
Consumption |
LED
based lamps will reduce energy consumption from 50 70%. |
| Operating
Life |
LED based products are guaranteed to operate for at least 50,000 hrs
(13yrs based on 10Hrs per day). They are also immune from degradation
caused by on/off cycles. LED lamps due not stop working after 50,000, but their effective light output deteriorates to approx 70% of initial after 50,000hrs. |
| Light
Quality |
Our
lamps operate with a colour temperature of around 6000K which is close
to daylight. The Colour Rendering Index is also high (>75) which
makes the light quality much better. |
| Low
Maintenance |
Long
Life & Cool operation means that maintenance on LED based lamps
is very low. |

Artist
Richard Box of Bristol University put several hundred fluorescent
light tubes in the ground under some high tension wires in a field
east of Bath. In the daylight, it looks like nothing is happening,
but when it gets dark, it is clear that all of the tubes are glowing
as a result of the "waste emission" coming from the overhead
wires. Reducing electricity consumption will reduce CO2 levels &
help reduce the number of overhead cables required, reducing 'waste
emission'. |
Switching
to LED based lamps will not only reduce
your Energy
Bill, but will also have a significant impact on the reduction of CO2.
| As
an example, based on 1600 x 4’ lamps running 10hrs
per day would cost approx £32,800 per annum. Switching to our
LED based solution, this would reduce to just £14,950, a saving
of £17,850 per year. |
