Q. Why is Efficacy important?

As an specialist in LED lighting, we are suprised at the misinterpretation of the the word EFFICACY.  Be aware that many companies less experienced will simply quote efficacy as the lm/W figure based on the power which is consumed by the LED lamp. This gives false information and not a true representation of the ‘actual’ power being taken from the system. When we say ‘system’, we mean the inclusion of the actual AC/DC converter that takes the AC mains and turns it into a low voltage supply required to drive the LED circuit. There is no such thing as 100% efficient power supply, and most LED drivers have efficiencies ranging from around 75 – 85%.

When we quote our efficacy figures, we always take into account the ‘system’ power.

The higher the efficacy (lm/W) the better the lamp / luminaire in terms of the amount of lumens (lm) per Watt (W) of circuit power.

Stay clear of any products with an efficacy of less than 50lm/W (due to Part L Buiding Regulations)
