An LED or Light Emitting Diode is a semiconductor based light source. They come in various colours including white.
A White LED is usually made up of a blue LED with a yellow phosphor on top. The more phosphor is applied the more yellow(warm) the light will be.
LEDs have the advantage of not emitting Infrared or Ultraviolet light ao their heat generation is much lower than an incandescent or fluorescent lamp and hence their efficacy (Watts to lumens generating efficiency) is higher.
A common misconception is that LEDs do not generate heat. An LED efficiency is only around 15%. Therefore, 85% of the power used by an LED generates heat.
